Yesterday, I posted on John Brennan’s seeming attempt to walk back some of his most incendiary rhetoric about President Trump. On Maddow’s show on Friday, he said that he didn’t actually mean that Trump was guilty of treason when he proclaimed
Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki rises to & exceeds the threshold of “high crimes & misdemeanors.” It was nothing short of treasonous. Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???
— John O. Brennan (@JohnBrennan) July 16, 2018
This sort of provoked a guffaw from Maddow who pointed out that the very English used in the statement did, in fact, state Trump had committed treason.
Today, former director of national intelligence James Clapper was on Jake Tapper’s barely watched show and Tapper asked Clapper if Brennan was becoming an issue.
TAPPER: We will get into the president’s behavior in a second.
But do you think that John Brennan’s hyperbole is an issue here, is one of the reasons we’re having this crisis?
JAMES CLAPPER, CNN NATIONAL SECURITY ANALYST: Well, I think it is. I think John is subtle like a freight train, and he’s going to say what’s on his mind.
I think, though, that the common denominator among all of us that have been speaking up, though, is genuine concern about the jeopardy or threats to our institutions and values, and although we may express that in different ways. And I think that’s what this — this really is about.
But John and his rhetoric have become, I think, an issue in and of itself.
As much as I hate to say it, it think known liar James Clapper has a point. The underlying issue is not Brennan’s or Clapper’s or Hayden’s or anyone else’s refusal to endorse and get behind Trump. This is not to say he wouldn’t welcome them home and feast them like the prodigal son if they did, because he would, but it is not logical to allow people who are engaging in the most scurrilous types of allegations continued access to classified information, even on an ad hoc basis, when they are clearly trying to engineer your impeachment or discredit you to the point that you literally can’t do your job. We are at the latter point right now with the media hysteria about everything Russian preventing collaboration with Russia even where it may save American lives.
Just as Brennan was trying to put out some of the napalm fires he has started…though I don’t believe that is possible…Clapper was trying to make the case that Brennan is actually batsh** crazy and he isn’t like that. He and the others realize they have pushed being a Resistance Sweetheart to the point that their pocketbooks are in danger. And they don’t like it.
That said, I do hope Trump pulls the clearances to the whole bunch that have aligned themselves with the Resistance and, in particular, I hope he pulls the plug on Clapper’s clearance. The insane and unhinged opposition to the administration has to stop and those with access to classified information must be made to understand that a clearance is a sacred trust, not a sincecure to be monetized for personal gain.
