As I covered yesterday, President Trump seems set to concede to a wall-less America in order to make Friday’s deadline for a budget agreement with congressional Democrats (here).
He has, however, claimed he can have the military build the wall. (here).
Ann Coulter isn’t so sure. In light of Donald’s bit of seeming withdrawal in the war on border security, she indicated she won’t vote for her once-hero Trump in 2020, if no wall has been built by then. In fact, she had this to say about the future of the GOP if no wall goes up:
“They’re about to have a country where no Republican will ever be elected president again. Trump will just have been a joke presidency who scammed the American people, amused the populists for a while, but he’ll have no legacy whatsoever.”
Not exactly subtle.
I could’ve limited the article to Ann’s scold, but how about a little optimism, too?
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich thinks we shouldn’t count Trump out over the temporary pause on that fabled partition between the U.S. and Mexico.
Speaking to Fox & Friends Wednesday, he offered the following:
“I have always thought having been through shutdowns when I was speaker, I don’t think shutting government down on Christmas Eve is particularly big win for anybody. … [The President] is probably trying to get past the Christmas season.”
As per Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Senate intends to support a “CR” (Continuing Resolution), which will keep the government funded through February 8th. That’s with no $5 billion for Trump’s wall, but also with no “Taps” being played for his greatest campaign promise.
Newt sees a win as still possible:
“He will come back again and again. The Democratic party is refusing to protect Americans, and presently, every time somebody who is here illegally kills somebody it is going to show up and the president will say, this is because the Democrats refuse to protect Americans. I don’t know that’s a good position for them to look out to 2020, as a party that doesn’t want to protect America.”
I believe him. Donald Trump is nothing if not tenacious. He’s also nothing if not, shall we say, with robust ego. I can’t imagine him wanting to exit his presidency having failed to fulfill his boldest pledge. He’s a construction man; if he can’t build it, who can? Then again, the Democrats are giving him ample opportunity to pass the buck. Hopefully, Gingrich is right, and everyone’s for the moment focused on passing the potatoes; and ham; at Christmas dinner. Then it’s back to war, with the red state guy fighting to the end — for America, and for those who voted him into the battle.
