JUST IN: Mnuchin Rejects Dems’ Subpoena For Trump’s Tax Returns, Setting Up Fierce Court Battle

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Friday rejected a House subpoena for President Trump’s tax returns, setting up a battle in federal court.

House Dems subpoenaed Steve Mnuchin after he formally rejected the House Ways and Means Committee’s request for Trump’s taxes — the deadline for docs to be handed over was (today) May 17, and Mnuchin did not budge.

The rabid Democrats are gunning for the last 6 years of President Trump’s tax returns and Steve Mnuchin basically told them to pound sand.

Mnuchin said the House Ways and Means Committee’s request “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose,” citing the legal advice of the Department of Justice, and said he was not authorized to hand over the returns, reported the Washington Post.

“We are unable to provide the requested information in response to the Committee’s subpoena,” Mnuchin wrote.

Earlier this week during a hearing before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, Mnuchin accused the Democrats of weaponizing the IRS and said he’s ready to take the battle to court.

“There is a difference in interpretation between Congress and us, the Department of Justice around this law that not only impacts this president and this Congress but has a very big impact on every single taxpayer in weaponizing the IRS and this is why there are three branches of government — So if there is a difference of opinion, this will go to the third branch of government to be resolved,” Mnuchin said on Wednesday.

Democrat Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee was furious on Friday after Mnuchin rejected the subpoena.

“I would throw the book at these guys,” Pascrell said. “We don’t have a kingdom, regardless of the imagination of some public officials … you deserve the full weight of the law. Let’s not play games anymore.”

Expect there to be lawsuits and fierce battles in court over Trump’s tax returns because currently there is no law stating that a US President or presidential candidate must release their tax returns.
